The confusion is rarely about the concept — it is about which of the half-dozen ferrule types the drawing actually calls for, and how the sizing works, because ferrule sizing is not what most buyers assume.

What Is a TC Ferrule?

A TC ferrule (tri-clamp or tri-clover ferrule) is a flanged stainless steel fitting welded to the end of sanitary tubing. Two ferrules are joined by compressing a gasket between their flange faces with a tri-clamp, creating a crevice-free, tool-free hygienic connection used across dairy, food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing.

A complete tri-clamp connection is three parts: two ferrules, a gasket between them, and a clamp holding it together. The ferrule is the welded half that stays on the pipe; the clamp and gasket are the removable half.

The Main TC Ferrule Types

Short weld ferrule (WMP)

The workhorse. A short overall length, butt welded to tube.

  • Overall length: around 0.5 inch
  • Best for: connecting to sanitary tubing where space is limited
  • Trade-off: less material to work with when welding — needs a competent welder

Same flange, longer tube-side tangent.

  • Overall length: around 1.125 inch
  • Best for: welding into vessels and tanks, or wherever extra room aids the weld
  • Advantage: easier to weld cleanly, especially for orbital welding

Reducing ferrule

A short ferrule that changes tube diameter within the flange itself, available in concentric (straight) and eccentric (tapered) faces. A more compact alternative to a full reducer.

TC Ferrule Sizing: The Chart Everyone Gets Wrong

Here is the trap: tri-clamp size is set by the ferrule flange OD, not the tube OD. And several small tube sizes share the same flange.

The most consequential consequence: 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch tube, and 1 inch and 1.5 inch tube, share a flange OD. A 1 inch and a 1.5 inch ferrule take the same clamp and the same gasket. Order by tube size alone and you can receive a physically correct part that mates to the wrong clamp.

*1/2″ and 3/4″ tube appear with several ferrule ODs depending on the system. Always confirm the ferrule OD with calipers before ordering clamps or gaskets. These dimensions follow the 3-A / ASTM A270 tri-clamp connection standard.

Practical rule: specify both the tube OD and the ferrule OD on the purchase order. One without the other is ambiguous.

How to Choose a TC Ferrule

  1. Connection type — welding to tube (short/long weld), to a vessel (long weld), butt weld to pipe (buttweld), threaded (male), or hose (hose ferrule)?
  2. Tube OD and ferrule OD — specify both; confirm the flange OD with calipers
  3. Grade — 316L for product contact, 304 acceptable for utility
  4. Finish — Ra 0.8 µm for food/dairy, tighter for pharma
  5. Welding method — long weld gives more room for orbital welding

Common Ferrule Ordering Mistakes

  • Ordering by tube size only — 1″ and 1.5″ share a clamp; specify ferrule OD too
  • Short weld where a novice will weld it — long weld is more forgiving
  • 304 on product contact — chlorides pit it; use 316L
  • Mismatched gasket OD — the gasket is sized to the ferrule OD, not the tube
  • Ignoring finish — a food line needs Ra 0.8 µm; the certificate should state it
